"Omma Studio " theatre  was founded by Antonis Diamantis,Anna Maheropoulou and Vagelio Saravanou,three  young Actors/actresses, in Athens, in 1991. Omma, in the ancient Greek language, means "eye" as well as "glance". The selection of this name is harmonious with the choice of the theatrical direction, that of the experimental theatre where research work is the primary element and demands as a prerequisite and as a result a new point of view, a new glance.

The work of our group proposes new theatrical codes to the spectators. Thus, it is about searching and testing the acceptable principles of theatre. What is theatre? What does it mean for an actor to "play"? How do Space and Time influence the function of the performance? We name the way we do theatre SpaceTheatre, because we are trying to "change", with our presence, space and time. We try to achieve this, applying specific principles based on physical actions.

We usually perform in non-theatrical spaces, in old storehouses, abandoned buildings, old schools, in Greece and abroad.

Since 1993, we make also street performances, because we are interested in how our technique can function in a "casual" space, like street, where the conditions for a performance cannot be controlled.

Omma's Studio way of work, originally inspired and influenced by Jerzy Grotowski's Theatre Laboratorium and fundamentally by Eugenio Barba's Odin Teatret, now follows its own paths and inquiries. The work is based on improvisation as well as the continual exercise and training of the actors' expressional resources; exploration on how the theatre can operate in today's world, what theatre means, what it can mean for a person to be a performer. Each performance begins from its final point, where nothing existed originally. There is no text, no preordained form. There is only a need to unrole the yarn, to let your own self, your body itself to tell the story.

 

Since 2000 ,Omma Studio theatre  moved  from Athesn  to t he  island of  Crete,in Iraklio city ,since we  believe that the "Theatrical spring" will come  from the  periphery.In  2002  we found  an  ex-factory

and  we  restored  it in a theatre space.Is one of  the most  interesting  and  beudiful theatre spaces in Iraklio,with 100 places.Omma Studio theatre  has 10 actors/actresses.Theatr has  the  following  activities:

-Theatre school  which  function from October till June  every year.Lessons are: Acting,Voice training,body technic,improvisation,History of theatre,

Dramatourgy.The school function twice a week,2.30 hours ,each time.

-Theatre  school  for  children,6-12  years  old.

-Street theatre perfromances(we  are  the only theatre  in Crete  which presents  street theatre  during the  whole  year).

-Theatrical collaborations,with  theatre groups  from abrod(till now  we  have  collaborate  with "Centro Spirimentazione e la RicercaTeatrale  sulle  arte  del Attore"  di Domenico Castaldo,Torino Italia,in  the performance of  the  Greek Ancient tragedy " Agamemnon" by Aichylos,inviting  5  actors  and  actresses as w ell as  the Turkish  artist  of  shadow theatre Cengiz Ozek,perfroming in a  common perfromance  in the  frames  of  the  First Meeting of  Ecological Theatre,in Iraklio,Crete) organizing for the summer 2011, a new  collaboration with "Vedogon theatre" from Moscow -Russia

-Organization of  theatre  Festivals in Omma Studio theatre  and  theatrical meetings.

-Organization of  theatrical seminars  throw  invitations  in actors/actresses, directors  and theatre teachers to  teach in Omma Studio theatre

-"Protecting  the  vanishing theatre spices" an activity  which protects  theatrical  crafts  which  are rare  and  usually they  don't have economical support  and  means  of  work.Thats  why  since 2005  we  organize  seminars  of  Maud  Robart in Iraklio and  in the Dormitories  of  the  Monastery of  Saint Anthony,in Zaros city(North of  Crete) where  Maud Robart and  her  fgroup work there  for  2  weeks  every year.Maud  Robart  work upo th  Vibratory  songs  from the  tradition of  Voodoo from Haiti,in the  frames  of  her  project  titled as  "Ayion Project"

-We  translate  and  publish  theatre  books upon  actor  and  stage  technic.Till now  we  have translated  and  published(in  collaboration  with "Gavriilides  publications "in Athens :"The  Edge point of  the  perfromance " by Thomas Richards  and  "The Land  of  Ashes and Diamonds"  by Eugenio Barba.

OMMA STUDIO AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

> 1993. Omma Studio invites ODIN TEATRET with the performance "Judith" (directed by Eugenio Barba, performed by Roberta Carreri), and the work demonstration "Traces in the snow" with the same actress.
Organizes Seminars for actors conducted by Torgeir Wethal (Odin Teatret).

> 1997. Omma Studio establishes the First Meeting of Research Theatre with the participance of 11 theatrical groups from all over Greece.

> 1998. Organizes the Second Meeting of Research Theatre again with 11 Greek groups. In this meeting Carla Pollastrelli presents in video an interview from Jerzy Grotowski. Organizes seminar for Greek actors conducted by the Polish actors Gregorz Brall and Anna Zuzrichka.

> 1999. Organizes one week workshop with the actors of ODIN TEATRET, Roberta Carreri and Torgeir Wethal.
Organizes the Third Meeting of Research Theatre in Lemessos, Cyprus and the First Meeting for Street Performances in Athens.

> 2000. Organizes one week workshop with the actors of ODIN TEATRET, Roberta Carreri and Torgeir Wethal.
Omma studio publishes the Greek translation of the book of Thomas Richards (Director of the Workcenter Of Jerzy Grotowski), "The edge point of the performance" Translation: A. Diamantis, Irene Koutsaki.

> 2001. OMMA STUDIO in cooperation with the Municipality of Heraklion, invites Odin Teatret and the performance "Itsi Bitsi" in Heraklion (7 & 8 of April 2001 in Heraklion, Creta) Roberta Carreri & Torgeir Wethal, actors of Odin Teatret, give seminars.
"Traces in the snow" and "Dialog between two actors" are also been presented (17. 18. 19 of June 2001, Heraklion, Creta).

> 2002

  • 22- 28 January 2002.
    Omma Studio has traveled to Tehran, Iran, for Fadjir International Festival, with the performance "Martyrima".
    In this meeting our group took the prize of best foreign performance.

    Omma Studio has been invited by the Chandigarh Institute of Performing Arts to perform the "Martyrima" and the street performance "Orpheus & Euridiki", during the Dance Workshop Festival, in Chandigarh.

  • "The love of Don Perliblin & Belisa in their Garden".
    "Omma Studio" makes the openings of its new theatre with the play of F. Garcia Lorca. This performance is been presented until May of 2003.
  • August of 2003 in Colombia.
    The group is traveling for second time in Colombia and presents its work in IV Festival de Teatro Callejero in Bogota, in the International Festival in Manisales, and in the cities Tunja Sibate and Sogamoso. Performance: "Orpheus & Euridiki".
